Tennis star Serena Williams, Purple Purse ambassador, brings awareness to financial abuse issue.
Serena Williams, the tennis superstar, is also a known for her advocacy for women's rights. In 2017, she began her mission to bring awareness to the issue of “Financial Abuse” when she became ambassador for the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse. In a video they made, Williams refers to this kind of abuse as an “Invisable Weapon” in domestic abuse cases.
Financial abuse is when an abusive partner controls the money to trap the victim. This happens in an astounding 99% of domestic abuse cases and can come in many forms, yet it’s relatively unheard of. The abuser may give the victim a small allowance, take control of the money and not allow them access to it, they may sabotage work or school, or it could be as simple as creating massive dept or stealing money.
Purple Purse, founded in 2005, aims to empower victims with tools and resources so they can leave the situation they are in. They’ve gained support from hundreds of domestic violence organizations nationwide along the way as they help raise awareness about this critical issue that traps victims in their abusive situation.
This is a lot to take in, which is why Williams joined forces with Purple Purse. She told USA Today that this issue effects 99% of cases, which shocked her. Purple purse helps women find a long-term way out through financial education. This is an important issue that needs to be talked about. For more information, their site and socials are linked below.
